Use a quality microphone
The most impactful step you can take is to use a dedicated USB headset microphone or professional speech microphone rather than a built-in laptop or desktop microphone. Built-in microphones are omnidirectional and pick up significantly more background noise.
Reduce Background Noise
Dictate in a quiet room. Close windows and doors to reduce external noise. Turn off fans, air conditioning units, and other sources of ambient noise if possible. Avoid dictating in open-plan offices or noisy environments.
Correct microphone positioning
Position your microphone approximately 1 to 2 inches from the corner of your mouth, slightly to the side. This positioning reduces breath sounds and plosive noises (such as “p” and “b” sounds) while ensuring a strong, consistent audio signal.
Speak Clearly and at a Consistent Volume
Speak at your natural conversational pace and volume. Do not shout or whisper. Maintain a consistent distance from the microphone throughout the dictation.
Check your audio levels
Before starting a dictation, check your microphone input level in the Dictalogic settings or in Windows Sound settings to ensure the level is neither too low nor clipping (too high and causing distortion). Aim for a level that is strong without peaking.
Use high quality audio settings
Where your account settings allow, ensure the audio recording quality is set to an appropriate level. Higher quality settings produce more accurate speech to text results.
